What is Efflorescence or White Salts? Everything You Need to Know AND HOW TO REMOVE IT
it’s basically calcium salts that form into a semi-crystal and become rock hard.
Most of us have heard and seen this a thousand times. Efflorescence, A white powdery substance that seems to come from behind your tiles & after a while is rock-solid.
So how do I remove these white salts?
Firstly, you’re going to need a hard scrapper and some strong cleaning products, typically an acidic based product and as always when using an acidic cleaner, you need an alkali to neutralise that acid after you’ve cleaned. EP Tile Cleaner is your perfect partner for cement stain removal combined with EP EcoKleen you have a One-Stop Solution for cleaning & restoration of tiled areas.
Both products are also available in HomePro stores across Malaysia. Store locations are here: https://www.homepro.com.my/locate-us
- Using your scrapper, scrap off the worst of the efflorescence. If it’s been there for a few years, it may take a while and some elbow grease, to get the worst parts off.
- Brush away any loose and remove efflorescence and ready your acidic cleaner.
- Wearing gloves, pour a small amount to the area where the problem is, you should see it hiss and bubble a bit, this is normal as the acid is eating away the efflorescence.
- Using a hard bristle brush, scrub the stubborn area, leave for 5 or 10 minutes*, just don’t let any acidic product dry on the surface. Now, flush with plenty of water.
- Flush once again using your alkali detergent, most detergents are alkali in nature so even your dish washing liquid will do.
- Leave this to soak in for about 25 minutes, scrub one more time & flush one more time.
Once everything is all clean & dry, you need to waterproof the grout lines with a penetrating product that is absorbed into the grout lines (using EP Fix-It-Right Waterproofing Solution).
The waterproofing process is to prevent and stop the wet-dry-wet-dry cycles that brought the efflorescence to the surface in the first place, you can stop that from coming back permanently.
Not rocket science is it!
